The placement of sofas in the living room is very important.
1. Sofas should ideally have a solid backing: This means having a firm support behind the sofa, like a mountain, providing a sense of security and aligning with Feng Shui principles.
2. If the sofa is placed behind a window, door, or passageway without a solid wall, it's considered to have no support, creating a feeling of emptiness and insecurity. If there's no solid wall behind the sofa, a low cabinet or screen can be placed behind it to create an "artificial backing," thus remedying the situation.
3. Water should not be placed behind the sofa. Placing an aquarium behind the sofa is a major Feng Shui taboo. It's also not advisable to place aquariums, water features, or other water-related decorations on a low cabinet behind the sofa. However, using evergreen plants to fill the space behind the sofa is beneficial.
4. Avoid placing a beam directly above the sofa, as this has a significant negative impact. Place two pots of lucky bamboo on the coffee tables on either side of the sofa; the ever-growing, upward-reaching bamboo will counteract the negative energy of the beam.
5. Avoid placing the sofa directly opposite the main door: If the sofa is in a straight line with the main door, this is considered a "clash" in Feng Shui. It's best to move the sofa, or place a screen between the two doors to mitigate the negative effects.
6. Sofas should be arranged in a curved rather than straight line. The sofa's important position in the living room is like a major port, facilitating the gathering of positive energy. Ideally, it should be arranged in a U-shape, not a straight line, as this is considered inauspicious. If this is not possible, create a bend at the exit point, known as "lower pass sand" in Feng Shui, to create a water-gathering formation.
7. Avoid having lights shining directly on the sofa.
8. Avoid having a mirror behind the sofa reflecting the back of your head.
9. Hang auspicious calligraphy or paintings above the sofa.
